Our membership poll says it all. "The best way to renew or obtain a membership is through a Door to Door campaign". Guess What? We don't have any body to coordinate the door to door effort, let alone any volunteers to actually go door to door and cover the roughly 1940 house holds within the community. Why don't people want to volunteer to go door to door? That's a good question and perhaps the making of the next poll. Here is a challenge, perhaps a few people can come forward with their neighbours and go to 5 to 10 households in their area. The task - communicate the request for membership, volunteers, and board members. Once we get that base, we can all build from that a community association that can sustain itself, offer more programs for all age groups, grow & address issues & concerns - a voice in the City arena and YES maybe just maybe far out in the future, build a community association building! We often hear - "well I am not buying a $20 membership now because I/we don't get anything out of it" Guess What? If things don't change fast, we will all lose because there won't be a Millrise Community Association in existance! CRUCIAL VOTE TO TAKE PLACE AT MILLRISE AGM - OCT.24, 2007

Notice of Motion

It is proposed that, in view of the lack of support from the residents of Millrise, low membership, and number of unfilled Board vacancies, the Millrise Community Association be dissolved forthwith and the assets disposed of in accordance with the By-Laws and the instructions from the City of Calgary.

This Motion will be moved at the AGM on October 24 and, if approved by a majority of Members present, will be put into effect immediately.

Approval will result in the closing down of all facilities and the resignation of the Board, subject only to the needs of the work required in winding up the affairs of the Millrise Community Association.

The MCA site, SKATING RINK and buildings thereon will become responsibility of the City of Calgary and it is anticipated that the site will be levelled and cleared for further development.

The only way to avert this motion is to become a member of the Millrise Community Association and vote it down at the upcoming AGM. We must also fill the majority of Board, Director, and Volunteer positions to allow the association to function properly. Join TODAY and become an ACTIVE member in your community! A thank you must go out to the many concerned Millrise & surrounding community residents that have started to build some new found energy around rebuilding our community association. The word of our situation has been spread (see news story “Crucial vote at Millrise AGM”) and many concerned people are saying “I didn’t know things were that bad” and “what has to be done to prevent the loss of our rinks?” Well here is an attempt to try and answer some of the key questions on people’s minds. We need to increase our community membership number significantly. We currently only have about 60 paid members out of a possible 1945 family households. That’s only 3%, which is much lower than the average city of Calgary community’s membership of 11%. The rough cost to run the community’s assets (the rinks plus operating expenses) is approximately $700 per month or $8,400 per year. With memberships only costing $20, that would take about 420 memberships just to break even. Well what about all the casino money groups receive? Yes, every two to three years we do get an opportunity to take part in a casino (if we can get volunteers), however, the Alberta Gaming board has very detailed and specific criteria in how those funds are spent. They can not be used for the day to day operating expenses of the association. Those funds need to be handled by your general revenue account, which is made up mostly by membership sales and donations. The next big issue is to have a solid pool of volunteers to help out on the Board of Directors. This doesn’t take a lot of time if the tasks can be spread over many people. Anyway, there are a lot people interested in helping out and we thank you all for just talking about it. We hope to see you at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Oct 24th. Do you love cold weather and clearing snow?  Better yet, have you always wanted to drive a Zamboni? 

We're the Millrise ice crew and we maintain the ice through the winter. The good news is that we have machines to do the heavy work and the work is extremely rewarding when we see kids active and skating. We're always looking for new volunteers. In October each year we begin our fall tune-up and we generally begin making ice in late November; please plan on coming down early in the year and get acquainted with the work.
