Residents of Millrise are breathing easier after hearing that their community association will not be disbanding. Due to a lack of board members and volunteers, the southwest community of Millrise was close to losing their community association and their skating rink. However, after the AGM, where many vital issues were brought forth, the verdict was clear and concise. Unanimously, the concerned residents of Millrise voted to keep their community association alive. Many board positions that had remained unfilled now have excited volunteers at the helm. The Millrise Community Association is no longer sailing towards rocky shores. Peter Jaras, Secretary, Web Manager and former Membership Director of the Millrise Community Association said, “I’m glad to see that more volunteers (board members) have stepped up to the plate.”

Family Day Skate- Another fun event!

Many community and surrounding area residents came out on Family Day (Monday February 18th) to enjoy the great weather and have some fun. The Millrise Community Association board and group of volunteers once again pulled off a well organized event. There was a lot to do, from skating with Harvey the Hound to enjoying a hot dog or beef on a bun. There was plenty of food and drink to satisfy families who worked up an appetite playing hockey or just skating on the oval. The City of Calgary provided volunteers to run kids’ events like snow shoe racing and snow painting. There was even a fire pit for those people who needed a quick warm up. The turnout was very high and a few more (well needed) memberships were purchased to help support the association to sponsor events like this one. A special thank you to Alana & Scott Sorokoski, who organized this successful event.

Currently plans are in the works for more events and programs to help strengthen and make Millrise the best community to live in. What would you like to see offered? Millrise Community Association

I just want to extend my gratitude on behalf of the Millrise Community Association to all the people in the community for making the Santa Skate on Dec 16th such a huge success!!! Being new in the position of lifestyles director and not having much experience in planning big events I really had to learn fast and didn’t have a lot of time to plan this special event. We had no idea on how many people we would be expecting since this event was open to everyone. We desperately hoped that we had enough food and drinks to feed everyone who show up, or that all the food we bought didn’t go to waste in case no one showed up. We were all pleasantly surprised that shortly after the sun came out so did the people in our community, but we never expected that it was going to be such a huge success and that we would actually have just enough food to feed everyone and none would go to waste! I was also very happy to run into quite a few familiar faces, which I knew in the community who had also showed up and brought their families to enjoy the day and show their support.

I really enjoyed planning this event and with the help of my board members putting it all together for you to enjoy. I am glad it turned out to be such a great success and felt good about being able to contribute to the community. It feels great being part of such a strong community where everyone knows one another and makes me realize that if I could make a difference in our community then you could too! If anyone out there has a little bit of time to volunteer we could really use you. Let’s come together and make a difference in our community together.

I hope you all had a lot of fun at this event and hope to see you all at our upcoming events in the future. I would also like to thank all the board members who volunteered their time and their BBQ’s and all those who donated prizes to our event Co-op, Millgreen Wine and Spirits, Allegro Hair, Pet Planet and Rogers Video and the anonymous donor who donated sunglasses. If you had a good time at this event please show your support by buying your membership so we can make more events like this possible.

I wish everyone a prosperous and healthy 2008!!

Newsflash

Do you love cold weather and clearing snow?  Better yet, have you always wanted to drive a Zamboni?

We're the Millrise ice crew and we maintain the ice through the winter. The good news is that we have machines to do the heavy work and the work is extremely rewarding when we see kids active and skating. We're always looking for new volunteers. In October each year we begin our fall tune-up and we generally begin making ice in late November; please plan on coming down early in the year and get acquainted with the work.
