Another season of ice skating has come and gone.  A big thank you has to go out to John Gardin, the Millrise Community Association, Facilities Director and the many rink volunteers that helped out.  As most of you know, it is difficult to install and maintain outdoor ice skating facilities in Calgary, due the ever changing weather conditions.  The Ice Hockey Rink was repaved and levelled last fall and also had new boards installed.  Ice quality in both the hockey rink and the pleasure skating oval was "some of the best ice we have seen" as stated by many people that came from all over south Calgary.  Many people (young and old) enjoyed some time in the fresh outdoors to play some pickup hockey or just skate for fun on the oval.  A lot of fun was also had by the volunteers that enjoyed driving the Zamboni and conditioning the ice.  Some of the ice making team were mistaken as City of Calgary employees.  Not true, the up keep of the ice was strictly volunteer based and funded by the efforts of the Millrise Community Association.  This is where your membership dollars and the results of fund raising activities go.  As we hang up our skates for the season and get ready to enjoy the NHL play offs, thoughts and planning are going into next seasons ice making efforts.  A top quality outdoor ice skating facility that even the Calgary Flames could enjoy!

Our membership poll says it all. "The best way to renew or obtain a membership is through a Door to Door campaign". Guess What? We don't have any body to coordinate the door to door effort, let alone any volunteers to actually go door to door and cover the roughly 1940 house holds within the community. Why don't people want to volunteer to go door to door? That's a good question and perhaps the making of the next poll. Here is a challenge, perhaps a few people can come forward with their neighbours and go to 5 to 10 households in their area. The task - communicate the request for membership, volunteers, and board members. Once we get that base, we can all build from that a community association that can sustain itself, offer more programs for all age groups, grow & address issues & concerns - a voice in the City arena and YES maybe just maybe far out in the future, build a community association building! We often hear - "well I am not buying a $20 membership now because I/we don't get anything out of it" Guess What? If things don't change fast, we will all lose because there won't be a Millrise Community Association in existance! SO YOU LIKE TO SKATE?

READ ON – THIS could AFFECT YOU!

You may have been among the many residents of Millrise and neighbouring communities who have used the outdoor skating rink and the recreational skating oval at the Millrise Community facility during this last winter and you may be looking forward to using the rink again next winter.

Before you sharpen up your skates and get your hockey sticks out in October you should be aware of the following facts.

1.The skating rink. Oval and the associated facilities are the property of the Millrise Community Association, built, with funds raised by the Community Association through Bingos Casinos and matching grants, and maintained by the Millrise Community association through revenue from memberships.

2.Day to day maintenance and preparation of the ice is done entirely by a team of volunteers

3.These facilities are situated on land leased from the City of Calgary and a condition of the lease is that they should be maintained by the Community Association IN GOOD ORDER.

4.In the event that the Millrise Community Association fails to maintain and operate the facilities the City will terminate the lease and dispose of the property as they see fit. - THERE WILL BE NO MORE SKATING

5.Because membership in the Millrise Community Association has been falling, the Association is very concerned that within the next 12 months there will be insufficient funds to continue to operate the facilities.

6. Furthermore, the number of vacancies on the Board of Directors means that the Association lacks the volunteer base to promote events and encourage membership.

7. Unless this trend is reversed, volunteers come forward to serve on the Board and MORE memberships are sold, the rink and facilities will cease operation in the near future. SKATERS AND RESIDENTS OF MILLRISE, - THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

The Millrise Community Association AGM is on October 24 2007

CRUCIAL VOTE TO TAKE PLACE AT MILLRISE AGM - OCT.24, 2007

Notice of Motion

It is proposed that, in view of the lack of support from the residents of Millrise, low membership, and number of unfilled Board vacancies, the Millrise Community Association be dissolved forthwith and the assets disposed of in accordance with the By-Laws and the instructions from the City of Calgary.

This Motion will be moved at the AGM on October 24 and, if approved by a majority of Members present, will be put into effect immediately.

Approval will result in the closing down of all facilities and the resignation of the Board, subject only to the needs of the work required in winding up the affairs of the Millrise Community Association.

The MCA site, SKATING RINK and buildings thereon will become responsibility of the City of Calgary and it is anticipated that the site will be levelled and cleared for further development.

The only way to avert this motion is to become a member of the Millrise Community Association and vote it down at the upcoming AGM. We must also fill the majority of Board, Director, and Volunteer positions to allow the association to function properly. Join TODAY and become an ACTIVE member in your community! Newsflash

Do you love cold weather and clearing snow?  Better yet, have you always wanted to drive a Zamboni?

We're the Millrise ice crew and we maintain the ice through the winter. The good news is that we have machines to do the heavy work and the work is extremely rewarding when we see kids active and skating. We're always looking for new volunteers. In October each year we begin our fall tune-up and we generally begin making ice in late November; please plan on coming down early in the year and get acquainted with the work.
